FROM THE DIRECTOR Regarding the Foundation: Busy time at BCF

My name is Tiffany Peters, Interim Executive Director of Barberton Community Foundation.

It’s exciting to have a local paper again, and I’d like to take a moment to thank Kurt Immler for bringing his business to Barberton.

Barberton Community Foundation was established in 1996 with proceeds from the sale of Barberton Citizens Hospital.

We provide scholarships to Barberton students and grants to nonprofit organizations supporting the residents of Barberton. We have recently added economic development as a focus, creating programs to support downtown business owners as well as businesses looking to expand or move into Barberton. Finally, we hold just over 110 funds here at the Foundation, supporting a variety of programs and honoring the legacies of many Barberton residents.

One of our newest funds is the Coach Rudy Sharkey Memorial Scholarship. His family wanted to celebrate his memory by providing a scholarship to a student displaying leadership, determination and teamwork through BHS athletics. Thank you to Coach Sharkey’s family, and to those who have already contributed to this scholarship.

Many fundraisers utilize the Foundation to support events that are beloved by Barberton such as the upcoming Labor Day BBQ Festival and Mum Festival.
Any donation to the Foundation in support of these events and their funds are tax-deductible.

I’d like to highlight the Bonnie M. Myers Memorial Mum Fest Arch Fund, which was established by the late Rev. Vic Myers. This fund helps ensure the Mum Festival Arch continues to provide beautiful photo opportunities each year.

It’s a busy time at the Foundation. Our most recent grant cycle awarded $139,500 to 14 area nonprofits focusing on health and wellness initiatives in Barberton.

One of our newest grant partners is CASA, meaning Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA is seeking volunteer Barberton residents to act as advocates for abused and neglected children. CASA volunteers help ensure the needs of each child are represented within the juvenile court system.

Finally, we’ll begin selling tickets to our Annual Dinner beginning Sept. 1. The Annual Dinner celebrates our Game Changers and is Thursday, Nov. 2 at the Galaxy in Wadsworth.
