BARBERTON SCHOOLS CLASS OF THE WEEK: Mrs. Lechner’s Second Grade (Week of Dec. 11, 2023)

This November, our second grade students were learning about the annual Thanksgiving Macy’s Day Parade by reading the book, “Balloons Over Broadway.” All second grade classes were invited to make a balloon float and participate in the Barberton Primary School’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The second grade students in Mrs. Lechner’s class chose to create their float based on the famous children’s book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. Mrs. Lechner said her students were able to see the amazing possibilities they could do with the book. They thought the caterpillar itself looked like a balloon float. Instead of making individual floats, the students chose to work collaboratively. Working together, they inflated, tied and crafted the balloon float. They also decorated costumes with the support of their teacher and other support staff members. Their balloon float was the culminating event in the parade! The students themselves loved to see the finished product. The rest of the building was excited to see such a familiar character from a book.
Here are a few comments students had to say about their experience:
“I liked when everyone saw us coming down the hall.” – Jordan McGlothlin
“I liked walking down the hall and people cheered.” – Amerie Guider
“My favorite part was blowing up the balloons.” – Lillyian Kramer
“I was excited to see everyone clapping loudly.” – Haidyn Goodrich
“I loved waving at everyone as we walked by.” – Jaxson Elliot

“We were the biggest float in the parade and it made me excited and proud!” – Harper Deal
