SWAT arrests man after Second Street standoff

BGNN staff report

BARBERTON  A 44-year-old Barberton man was jailed July 14 after allegedly shooting his neighbor’s house and then barricading himself in his own.

Shannon D. Karr was in the Summit County Jail July 15 charged with improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation, a second-degree felony.

Police responded to the corner of Second Street SW and Palmer Avenue July 14 for a report of a man shooting into his neighbor’s house. Officers saw the bullet hole right away.

Police say Karr came out onto his porch but ignored commands to come down and went back inside. The Barberton Police Department SWAT was called in and a negotiator tried fruitlessly for two hours to talk to Karr. The team lobbed several tear gas canisters into the house. Karr surrendered.

No one was injured in either the initiating gunshot nor the subsequent standoff, police say.
