BARBERTON SCHOOLS CLASS OF THE WEEK: Mrs. Steinman’s 2nd Grade (Week of Feb. 5)

Kids get to take home Pancake for long weekends and they also feed the well-loved guinea pig leftover veggies from lunch.
Mrs. Steinman’s second-grade class had an assignment to talk with their families about where their ancestors came from. Each child got a chance to share their family’s story and locate their countries or states on the world map. They discovered that many of their ancestors came from different parts of the world! They also learned about many different winter holidays, including where and how it is celebrated, when and why they celebrate, what traditions they have, and who is involved in the celebration. They listened to and watched traditional music and dances and learned traditional games. Here are a few things students had to say on what they learned about holidays around the world…
“I learned that in Holland, sometimes Sinterklaas’s helpers open the door and throw candy in the house!” – Leonora K.
“I liked learning about Mexico the most because we have classmates who have actually been there with their families for the Los Posadas Holiday!” – Taelynn D.
“I liked Santa Lucia Day in Sweden because the girls dress up, sing songs, and make breakfast in bed for everyone!” – Ava S.
“I learned that in Holland, they leave their wooden shoes by the fireplace instead of stockings! We even tried on a pair of wooden shoes!” – Anna K.
“It was interesting that in Hanukkah there is one big candle that lights the rest!” – Stefan J.
“It was cool that some places get much longer holidays and more days than we do!” – Maddix M.
“I learned that Sinterklaas comes on a boat, not a sleigh!” – Joey M.
“It was interesting that Sinterklaas has grown up helpers!” – Dominique B.
“I liked learning about Hanukkah and playing with the dreidels.” – Addy K.
“I liked that we had a pair of wooden shoes to try on in class!” – Sebastian B.
