SEPT. 18 VS. CLEVELAND LINCOLN 19-6
Akron Beacon Journal prediction: Phillips worried about offense but Magics will win. Beacon record 2-0.
After the huge victory over the Elyria Pioneers, it was hoped the Magics would not have a let down against Cleveland Lincoln. Ken Sennett was a very adept passer, but on this night his passing wasn’t needed. Yes, he did hit Russ Shriner with a touchdown pass, but the Magics just pounded Cleveland Lincoln on the ground.
Junior John Vargo led the attack with 89 yards, Art Evans ran for 72 and Sennett ran for 52 as they outgained Lincoln 306 yards to 52. The defense not only held them to 52 yards rushing they allowed Lincoln just three first downs for the entire game. It was a theme that held up all season: the Magics defense was dominant!
Before Shreiner’s touchdown, Barberton took advantage of a Joe Suboticki fumble recovery with a John Vargo touchdown. Paul Okolish also scored on a 5-yard run and the only extra point for the Magics was a boot by Bob Papp.
The unbeaten streak had reached eight games but the following week Hoban was coming to Magic Stadium. It was Hoban who had defeated the Magics 0-14 in 1963.
PLAYER MEMORIES
Terry Brown: “We were not the same team as in the Elyria game, we may have had a bit of a letdown, but we were still good enough to win, our D was fantastic. We also may have been looking a little bit ahead, we knew Hoban was coming to town
