LOCAL CRIME Anger burns in Snyder Avenue dispute

Gazette staff writer

BARBERTON  An argument at a Snyder Avenue house July 15 culminated in a fire and an arrest.

Around 11:30 a.m., a passerby called 911 about a house fire at the address. The first Barberton Fire Department unit on scene quickly realized the blaze was outside and canceled other units, handling the matter themselves. The fire was extinguished in a few minutes.

The fight that sparked the fire was still burning and Barberton Police arrived to handle that half of the matter.

“A lot of clothing and other belongings were removed from the home and set on fire,” Barberton Officer Marty Eberhart said.

The fire was lit close enough to the house to blacken the siding and soffit, Eberhart said.

Elijah L. Simmons, 21, was arrested for aggravated arson, a second-degree felony. He’s being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond.
