Akron man dies in rail accident

BARBERTON  A man was killed around 4:30 p.m. Sept. 1 when he was hit by a train while walking on the CSX railroad track near the Waterloo Road crossing.

Richard E. McCollam, 64, of Akron, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office took the body.

The train was stopped for several hours while emergency workers cleared the scene and a fresh train crew was brought in from Pennsylvania, which is a standard procedure in such an incident.

“He and the guy he lives with were just walking down the track after doing some fishing,” Police Chief Vince Morber told BGNN.

Morber said one of the pedestrians stepped off the track but apparently McCollam didn’t hear the train and was hit.
