Barberton’s Destination Imagination teams advance

On April 6, Barberton’s Destination Imagination teams competed alongside 115 teams across Ohio for a bid to Global Finals in Kansas City, Missouri next month.
Students displayed their diverse talents and engineering design through pinball machines, catapults, scientific discoveries, and creative presentations. Students also demonstrated their ability to think outside the box as they competed in Instant Challenges to solve on-the-spot problems within a time limit, according to information provided by Sheila Velo.
Four teams will advance to the final competition to compete with students from around the globe. Taking first in the Project Outreach category are The Rainbow Pickled Pearwolves, made up of Kathleen Clark, Kieya Green, Perrin Huntsman, Kevin Landals, Alivia Phillips, and Tavin Rowinsky. Accalia Rowinsky is the team manager. The Spicy Sombreros took second in Engineering and received a DaVinci Award. The team includes Bentley Dantz, Gavyn Dantz, Andrew O’Brien, Trenton O’Brien, Layne Schaefer, Jonathan Winkler, and Troy Winkler with team managers Robyn Harvey and Amanda O’Brien. Just the Tonys Eat a Shrekaroni scored second in the Technical category with team members Joel Cunningham, Aurora Ludwig, Rylee Newbrough, and Donovan Robinson. The team manager is Abigail Robinson. Purple Pickles were second in the Scientific challenge featuring Phoenix Gauer, Haley Lorenzo, Zoey Lorenzo, Jade Robinson, and Vivian Velo. Team managers are Andrea Tomer and Sheila Velo.
The cost of the trip to Globals is exceptional, and students are working hard to offset as much of it as possible. Teams have sold concessions throughout the school year and coordinated a trivia night to raise funds. They are currently selling coupon cards featuring local businesses and will host a benefit at Wink’s on May 29.
