Bernard M. Gnap, 75

Bernard M. Gnap, 75 passed away May 17, 2024 after a year long illness. He was born on Feb. 7, 1949, in Barberton, Ohio. He graduated from Hoban High School in 1967. He received a B.A degree in Theology from St. John’s University in Minnesota. He retired from Acme after 30 years of service. He was a lifelong resident of his beloved town of Barberton.

Bernie had a passion for history and was particularly an astute scholar and expert on the history, life and businesses of Anna Dean Farm that was created by O. C. Barber, the founder and namesake of Barberton. Bernie served many years with the Barberton Historical Society. His contributions raised both the funds and awareness that has preserved many Barberton legacy landmarks, and helped Barberton maintain its unique architectural style evident today. Bernie wrote and documented the rich history of this town with many articles, essays, DVD and published books.  He lit up a room with excitement and a sense of adventure as only he could do taking us back to that era. If there wasn’t much interest initially it drew you right in wanting more. People would stay after his talks asking questions and he did not miss a beat to answer each one.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna (Kupecz) Gnap, and his sister, Joanne (Gnap) Crookston. He is loved and will be remembered by his many extended family members and friends.

A memorial mass will be at St. Francis De Sales, 4019 Manchester Road at 10:30 a.m. June 15.

Special thanks to the residents and staff at both Pleasant Point, Pleasant View Skilled Living and Summa Hospice for their kindness and care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Barberton Community Foundation O.C. Barber wishing well project. Visit www.barbertoncf.org.

I will always remember, with fondness, getting to tour Glendale Cemetary (where Barber is burried) with Bernie and Steve. R.I.P Bernie.
