BARBERTON  At 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15 handbells will be rung at the gazebo at Lake Anna Park symbolizing and echoing bells in Philadelphia that were rung when the U.S. Constitution was first signed.
The Catherine Richards Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is hosting the event and inviting anyone to join in with a bell and bring a lawn chair to the event if needed.

The event begins at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at the gazebo at 615 W Park Ave. and kicks off Constitution Week by celebrating the signing of the historical document.

Guest speakers include Judge Diane Stevenson, Judge Todd McKenney, and District 7 Council member Bethany McKenney. The Dazzling Daughters will provide a special performance.
The DAR is a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women’s organization and one of the largest patriotic women’s organizations in the world with about 190,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters across the country and several other countries.

The DAR initiated the observance in 1955, when the service organization petitioned the U.S. Congress to dedicate Sept. 17-23 of each year to the commemoration of Constitution Week, according to a news release. Congress adopted the resolution, and on Aug. 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into public law.

The celebration’s goals are to encourage the study of historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787; to remind the public that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the foundation for its way of life; and to emphasize U.S. citizens’ responsibility to protect, defend and preserve the U.S. Constitution.
