SEPT. 25 VS. HOBAN 26-0
Akron Beacon Journal prediction: It’s a tough one but takes Barberton: Beacon record 3-0.
Here comes Hoban. The last Magic loss had been to Hoban 14-0 in 1963. It was a dismal night for the Barberton offense as they managed only a 106 yards tool offense. This time the Magics were ready. It was an odd night. Because Hoban’s field was not ready for play, the game would be played at Magic Stadium. So, it was a Barberton away game but played at Barberton’s field. Hoban took over concessions, the press box, their fans would sit on the Magics normal home side, and Hoban was the home team on the scoreboard.
The Magics jumped out quickly to a 14-0 lead then the unthinkable happen, star quarterback Ken Sennett was kicked out of the game for fighting with a Hoban defender. That left the quarterback position to senior Chuck Barna and sophomore Archie Strimmel. Strimmel led the Magics to end zone with a 44-yard touchdown pass to Joe Suboticki. John Vargo had a big night, rushing for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Dave Kapes set up the other Magic touchdown taking the ball down to the one yard where Tom Cheatham took it in for the score. Despite the loss of Sennett, the Magics still controlled the game, especially once again defensively allowing Hoban to get deep into Magic territory only once.
PLAYER MEMORIES
Terry Brown: “It was odd being the visitors on our own field, but we were ready. I was really ready; I was the quarterback when we lost the previous year to Hoban. I had a pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Yes, I was ready for the Golden Knights.”
