NORTON A quick-thinking cop braved the frigid waters of Wolf Creek Dec. 29 and freed a motorist trapped in a vehicle that night.
City police and rescue crews were called to the 3300 block of Summit Road at 8:04 p.m. from a witness who saw that a vehicle had run off the street and into the creek, resting against a tree.
The 75-year-old woman driving was screaming for help.
Norton Police Sgt. Sean Connor got there first and started coordinating a rescue plan, entering the chilling, fast-moving water himself to reach the woman. He was soon joined by officer Mike Guarnieri. Officer Michael Manos, and firefighter Shane Smith entered the water later to help the other officers and the woman ashore. The driver was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Police learned that during that night’s raging windstorm, the woman, southbound on Summit, had run off the road and into the creek. Strong currents had swept the vehicle under a bridge and downstream about 300 yards until it came to rest on the tree.
“This incident underscores the bravery and dedication of Norton’s first responders,” Norton Police Chief Brett McShane said. “Sgt. Connor, Officer Guarneri, Officer Manos and Firefighter Smith demonstrated extraordinary courage and professionalism, risking their own safety to save another life. Their actions highlight the commitment of first responders to serve and protect their community, even in the most dangerous circumstances. I am proud of their efforts and grateful for their service to the citizens.”
