James Selnik, 78

James Selnik, 78, loving and devoted husband, Dad, and Papa, passed away in Hospice on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 after a courageous battle with Leukemia. He was born in Akron on July 15, 1946 to the late Cyril and Anna (Babos) Selnik. He graduated from Kenmore high school in 1964, then attended Akron University, graduating in 1970. Jim married Kathleen Szalay that same year, moving them to Florida where he had begun his career as a physical education teacher. After having their first child, Jim and Kathy moved back to Ohio in 1972, remaining in the Barberton-Norton area from then on. They spent the rest of their lives together being wonderful parents to Stephen, Laura, and Maria.
Jim worked for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services for over 30 years. Jim always loved traveling with his family, and especially loved being a Papa to Audra, Luka, and Lily. His life always revolved around family. He also had a love of history, classic cars, Cleveland sports, and classic rock.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Kathleen M. Selnik; and sister, Carole Egleston. He is survived by his son, Stephen Selnik (Jeannie Flinn); daughters, Laura (Tony) Pagura, Maria (Tom) Wallace; grandchildren, Audra, Luka, and Lillian; sister, Stephanie Hall; sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Amonett; many nieces and nephews; and other loving family and friends.
The Memorial Service will be on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Bacher-Moore Funeral Home, 3250 Greenwich Road, Norton, Ohio. Visitation will be from 2pm to 4pm at the funeral home, concluding with a short prayer service officiated by Deacon Robin Adair at 4pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, or Cleveland Clinic Hospice Care in memory of James.
