The Barberton Magics Football All-Time leader in wins is stepping down. After three Suburban League Championships, two undefeated regular seasons, qualifying for the State playoffs seven times, and compiling a record of 77-53, Coach Tony Gotto has resigned. Returning to his alma mater 12 years ago, Gotto put new life into the Magics football program.

When asked to name memorable games from his years as the Magics mentor, Gotto never hesitated. The two games that stand out the most were the 2017 35-14 win over St. Vincent-St. Mary and the Highland game when we used the “Beef Package” and ran the same play eight straight times and scored with seven seconds remaining to down the Hornets, he said.

What he also remembers is the relationships he has built over the years with the players, his assistants, and the Magic community. He, like most coaches, treasures seeing his players become successful after leaving, and returning to visit years later.

“Coach Gotto cared about his players on and off the field,” said Barberton City Schools Athletic Director John Sabol. “His willingness to help them not only when they played for him, but even after graduation speaks volumes about the type of person he is.”

Gotto was a hugely successful Magic, not only as a coach but also as a player, and stepping down was not an easy decision.

“I told the boys last week the program needed a new face 12 years ago and I was able to come in and
rejuvenate the team and now, after 12 incredible seasons, I truly believe it’s time that a new coach bring some fresh new energy and passion to the program. The Magics need to work from the youth level all the way through high school. All I want is to see our community and our program to thrive. Go Magics!”

Good luck Coach, you will be missed.
