Man killed, two others injured in Van Buren crash, apparent shooting

BARBERTON  A car with three men crashed into a utility pole on S Van Buren Avenue around 10 p.m. June 18, leaving one dead and the other two injured.

Police say all three were injured in the crash and the dead man had also been shot. The two survivors were taken to an area hospital.

According to a release from the Summit County Medical Examiner, a 20-year-old male appeared to have sustained an apparent gunshot wound. Once the autopsy examination is completed and positive identification is made, the office will provide an update, the release states.

At about 10 p.m., Barberton Police and EMS responded to the reported traffic crash in the 300 block of S Van Buren Avenue, the release from the medical examiner’s office states. When first responders arrived on scene, they discovered the victim lying on the sidewalk with bystanders performing CPR.  Despite resuscitation efforts, the victim was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

The Barberton Police Detective Bureau is investigating, with help from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, Barberton Officer Marty Eberhart said. He added that there was
no other information releasable at the time of this writing and asked anyone who knows anything about the incident to call Barberton Police at 330-745-2181.
