Porch fire damages Ries Street house

BARBERTON  It took 17 firefighters from three departments about half an hour May 22 to extinguish a fire at a Ries Street address that started on the porch.
“The call came in around 1:20 p.m.,” Barberton Fire Chief Steve Ionno told BGNN. “A resident saw smoke coming through the front door and looked out and saw the porch was on fire.”
Everybody evacuated and no one needed transportation to a hospital, Ionno said,
although one person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
Crews from the Coventry and Norton fire departments helped Barberton that afternoon.
The blaze worked its way from the porch to the upper levels of the house, including the attic and roof. Ionno guessed the damage between $80,000 and $90,000.
As of the afternoon of May 23, the cause was still being investigated.
