73-year-old man dies in Barberton apartment fire

Barberton Fire Department was assisted by mutual aid fire crews from New Franklin, Coventry and Norton to put out this apartment fire above Bar Shannon. One person was found outside and was taken to a local hospital and another person was found deceased in an apartment after the fire was under control, according to news releases.

BARBERTON  Several crews responded to a structure fire just before midnight Dec. 10 in the 100 block of 16th Street NW. 

One victim was found outside and was transported to Barberton Hospital by the New Franklin Fire Department, according to a Barberton Fire Department news release. Another victim was later found deceased within the structure, the release states. 

The man was identified as Danny Jenkins, 73, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Fire crews were dispatched to the Bar Shannon in the 100 block of 16th Street NW for reports of smoke and flames coming from the second story of the structure with possible victims trapped. The first arriving units found heavy smoke and fire coming from the windows of the second story, the BFD release states. Crews were able to locate and have the fire under control by 12:16 a.m. 

Once the fire was under control, Jenkins was located in the living room of the apartment and was pronounced deceased at 1:30 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s release. 

The scene is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal and the Summit County Coroner. 

“We would like to thank the Barberton Police Department, as well as mutual aid fire crews from New Franklin, Coventry, and Norton,” the Barberton Fire Department news release state. “We will provide further details when they become available.”
