Firefighters battle Spartan blaze

Crews from four fire departments battled an industrial blaze on Norton Avenue early the evening of March 2.

Norton firefighters were dispatched to Spartan Enterprises around 6:25 p.m., responding to a commercial fire alarm. They arrived within five minutes, confronted by thick, black smoke and flames on the roof, Fire Chief Adam Papp told BGNN.

“The fire was knocked down by Norton’s first arriving engine,” Papp said. “Additional crews advanced to the roof and completed extinguishment.”

Papp said the fire was kept to the outside of the roof and it appeared rubber products used in the production process caught fire near a roof vent.

No one was hurt and the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, Papp said.

Barberton, Copley and Fairlawn fire crews helped and the cause is being investigated.
